Pilatus Aircraft Ltd

Short Changeover Times with Modular and Ergonomic Workbenches

Initial Situation

The internationally active Swiss company Pilatus Aircraft Ltd is known for its globally unique aircraft, including training and smaller multi-purpose aircraft. Various wiring harnesses are required for different aircraft, differing significantly in design, such as length and shape. Depending on the wiring harness design, simple tables were arranged in the required shape and fitted with appropriate boards. While this method functioned in principle, it made working comfortably and safely more challenging. Employees frequently bumped into table legs, and maintaining a comfortable, ergonomic posture was difficult. Furthermore, arranging the tables was cumbersome and required a significant amount of time.

Challenge

Pilatus aimed to implement a workstation system that enhances ergonomics and safety for employees while remaining modular, flexible, and easily expandable. Additionally, the changeover time for tables and boards used in wiring harness installation was to be reduced and simplified. The conversion of large work surfaces should require no more than two employees.

Solution

Phoenix Mecano worked closely with KKS Ultraschall AG to develop a customized design proposal, leveraging their long-standing partnership and deep understanding of KKS Ultraschall AG’s specific requirements. Using the provided STEP files, the customer gained a detailed insight and made necessary adjustments before final production, making the development process highly efficient.

Excellent communication and mutual understanding streamlined collaboration, allowing even minor changes to be implemented quickly and efficiently. Phoenix Mecano also ensured compliance with relevant standards and incorporated closed profiles as required. Upon completion, Phoenix Mecano organized the transport of the machine enclosure, delivering it in modular sections due to its size.

This modular approach simplified on-site assembly and ensured seamless integration with the etching and cleaning system. Additionally, Phoenix Mecano provided storage space to help KKS Ultraschall AG manage space constraints flexibly and efficiently.
