Waterproof enclosure solutions for maritime applications

Our robust marine-grade enclosures, offering high resistance to salt water, are ideal for ships, port facilities and offshore systems. They withstand corrosion, vibrations and extreme conditions thanks to passivation with Surtec 650 and three coating options: SWB (powder coating), SGB (with a wet paint primer as an adhesion promoter) and SGBL (primer plus full wet paint finish). On request, we can also apply the paint in accordance with TLA 0003/TLA 0033, specifically for defence technology and marine approvals.

Phoenix Mecano’s marine enclosures easily meet the EN 9227 NSS standard with at least 1,000 hours of salt spray testing and are tested in our own laboratory. Furthermore, they remain reliably watertight for years and comply with protection class IP66 or IP67 as standard. Other IP protection classes such as IP68, IP69 or IP69K are easily achievable with us and are also tested in-house. Customisable with long-term available electronic components, foil heaters and more, Phoenix Mecano provides corrosion-resistant enclosures that leave nothing to be desired in terms of either quality or service. On top of that, our offshore enclosures are also available in explosion-proof variants.

Material and Coatings

Aluminium with passivation, anodising and various coatings, enclosures made from V4A stainless steel, as well as polyester enclosures, are all suitable, depending on the application, for use in environments near water. V4A stainless steel is inherently corrosion-resistant, but can also be additionally coated in accordance with customer specifications. At Phoenix Mecano, aluminium enclosures are first degreased, cleaned and passivated using Surtec 650. The customer then has the following options:

  • SWB: Surtec 650 passivation and powder coating

  • SGB: Surtec 650 passivation and priming with wet paint as an adhesion promoter and additional protection

  • SGBL: Surtec 650 passivation, priming with wet paint as an adhesion promoter and additional protection, followed by wet paint coating

All enclosures are subsequently fully machined, including operations such as drilling, milling and thread cutting. Any uncoated surfaces created during this process are then passivated again. Phoenix Mecano also handles complete assembly and fitting with customised components on your behalf.

EMC Shielding for seawater-resistant enclosures

Our enclosures offer integrated EMC shielding that protects your electronics from electromagnetic interference. This interference can originate from motors, switchgear, or radio sources, for instance, and can significantly disrupt sensitive systems. The closed metal enclosure creates an effective Faraday cage that keeps interference signals out. For plastic enclosures, this protection is achieved via copper-chrome-nickel vapour deposition or a conductive copper coating.

Additionally, conductive seals are used for our EMC enclosures. They ensure that the electrical contact between the lid and the enclosure is permanently maintained, even in the event of vibration, temperature fluctuations, or corrosion. This is particularly important in combination with seawater-resistant enclosures, as salt and moisture could otherwise attack the contact points and weaken the shielding effect over the long term. This ensures your equipment is not only protected against seawater, but also remains electromagnetically stable and reliable in operation.

FAQs

An enclosure is suitable for marine and offshore environments when it is designed to withstand salt water, humidity, vibration and extreme weather conditions. This requires corrosion-resistant materials such as AlSi12 aluminium or V4A stainless steel and protective surface treatments for long-term durability.
Corrosion protection in marine enclosures is achieved through material selection and surface engineering. Aluminium is typically treated with Surtec 650 passivation and additional powder or wet paint coatings, while V4A stainless steel provides inherent corrosion resistance and can be further coated if required.
Marine-grade enclosures are commonly available with IP66 or IP67 protection as standard. Depending on the application, higher protection classes such as IP68, IP69 or IP69K can also be achieved for enhanced resistance against water ingress and cleaning processes.
Marine enclosures are tested according to EN 9227 NSS salt spray standards and are often approved by classification societies such as Lloyd’s Register or ABS. These certifications ensure suitability for maritime and offshore applications.
Yes, marine enclosures can be customized with integrated HMI solutions such as membrane keypads, displays and input systems, as well as application-specific electronic components. Additional features such as transparent foil heaters can also be integrated depending on the application.
